Musings for a new year

A new year, a fresh start, a better perspective on life. This is always a time for reflection for me. I always think about the last year and what happened in it. I am thankful for the good and learn lessons from the bad. I must say that mostly the last year was good. I turned a milestone age and I got into my dream school. I am studying to be what I have always wanted to be. I learned a lot about myself and so there was a lot of self-discovery. I also appreciate others and their roles in my life. My family who is always supportive and my friends who are understanding and loyal.

One of the things that I have always wanted to do was start a blog. I am happy that I have managed to do so. I want this blog to be a medium of expression for me and a way for others to communicate with me as well. I want to know other peoples thoughts and opinions. I want to extend my knowledge to others who may be in need of it. I want people to be able to tell me about what they are going through and let me validate how they feel and if they want I can give them some advice. I hope to be that understanding individual that people feel comfortable sharing with. I am not an authority or an expert, I am just an empathic human being who wants to help other people heal.

So let me help you heal.

So as I end my very first semester of grad school, I have to say that it has been a roller coaster ride. I had no idea what i was in for when i started my training to be a counselor/therapist. This is an amazing yet emotionally draining experience. I do feel that I have learned so much in these last few months and I feel different. I look at the world in a deeper, more emotionally connected way. I am more open to the feelings of others and how they affect me. I am also more in touch with my own emotions which is something the program focuses on getting us to do. I have so much more to learn and improve on but i feel positive that I am on my way.

Becoming a therapist

My various life experiences have taught me that we all need a support system in order to cope. I have never been in formal therapy but I believe that talking to someone about your problems gives you relief and sometimes a different perspective. I was lucky that I had people in my life I could talk to without fear of being judged. Other people may not have such people in their lives and so they have the option of going to a therapist/counselor.

A counselor (helper) is someone who is compassionate and can empathize with people (clients). I know that I possess these qualities and have the necessary skills to become a counselor. Therapy helps individuals to be able to cope with their problems and gives them insight into how they should go about resolving them. Therapy can bring about better understanding of one’s past, present and/or to better plan one’s future. I really believe in therapy and the counselor’s ability to make a difference in the lives of their clients. Therapy does not just have to be structured or formal, it can simply be a talking therapy in which the person can be honest and open without having the fear of being judged. This gives the person a sense of security and helps them to move towards a resolution of their emotional issues.

I got involved with peer counseling and got the opportunity to counsel underprivileged women and teenagers.  Ultimately, I was able to assist the women I counseled to realize their potential and take advantage of possibilities within themselves, as well as in the environment. These experiences helped shape my decision to go into counseling. I was able to make an impact in the lives of these individuals and help them grow more confident in order to deal with their various issues. This is the only career that I can see myself in and I am willing to work hard and do no matter what it takes to achieve my goals.
